While in the area word on the street was The Appalachian and Ohio Railroad was going to make a daylight run south through mountain West Virginia to the southern most currently active customer at Heaters. This chase provided an amazing trip through some of the most beautiful territory in the United States. By the time we arrived at Heaters it was dark but still provided from some great sights and sounds in the mountains of West Virginia. As of this video keeping the Cowen line alive is the Weyerhaeuser Mill at Heaters, a few railroad tie manufacturers, and a small tank car customer. No major traffic currently runs south of Heaters as it is primarily coal mines not currently exporting by rail. This is a must visit area for anyone just for the scenery and a must visit especially for those that can appreciate mountain railroading. The A&O only provides a small glimpse of what was here 40 years ago but what is left is still incredible. The line had been cut back in the 1980s from the original B&O through route via the old Elk River Railroad. All traffic from the south must go north to Grafton, WV where the A&O interchanges with CSX.
