Cheap speakers tend to be garbage. But, sometimes you don't want to drop $1500 on a set of Genelec's or need to use them as blunt weapons so you buy cheap ones! But, now you discover they sound like trash!!! So, do what I do and upgrade them a bit! There's two main issues that cheap speakers have: Poor alignment (More on that below) that causes ringing and a lack of "damping material" to absorb the sound from the back side of the speaker that eventually bounces around and comes back out of that same woofer, but delayed and out of phase and now it sounds a bit like the glass test I showed here. Two solutions below... For the lack of damping material problem, just ADD damping material. Regular wool, fiberglass wool or even rockwool. Just stuff some inside and it'll go from sounding a bit like a washtub to only half like a washtub and doing this is free. For the "Alignment" problem, it comes down to this: The "tap test" I spoke of, when you gently tap the woofer cone, if it makes a bong sound instead of a thud or tap sound, it's because the speaker has a poor design (Qts) and it smears EVERY sound into a bong. Every impulse (Lower frequency) and sound causes that speaker system to ring like that and smear that sound. If it has a port, you can try just sticking a tiny bit of stuff into that port and tapping the woofer gently again as close to the dust bubble as possible without actually touching it. Just enough to hear if it makes a thump or a bong. In fact, a good example is tapping your palm of your hand with your finger. THAT is the sound you want. A well controlled sound where the thing causing the sound makes that sound, then stops. Not like tapping the bottom of a steel washtub that goes booooooong, you want one quick thud. But, if your speaker bongs, try a bit of fluffy material of some sort in the port. You don't need to plug it, you just need a bit. Even a 2" wide port can often be damped down with a finger diameter bit of wool or even cotton that's held in place somehow. Tape it in loosely, hold it in place with some wire, whatever works. If it's not ported, you can also try just getting carried away with the stuffing. Stuff the heck out of it and check it again. Sometimes it takes some playing around, ESPECIALLY if you're not the one who designed it and/or you don't have any tools to measure it. If you have any questions, I tend to respond within a few days depending on health. Take care and good luck!!! -Fraken
