On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to make immigration enforcement a key pillar of his administration. He promised to invest in “mass deportation,” crackdown on illegal immigration and bolster the Department of Homeland Security’s operations. He’s since made good on those promises. Across the country, immigration enforcement operations have skyrocketed. The administration has undone long-held practices to keep enforcement away from “safe spaces,” like schools and health care facilities, and significant funding has poured into Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Federal immigration officers have also pursued aggressive enforcement practices, sometimes with fatal consequences. In June, these actions led to massive protests across the country and the Pacific Northwest. In the months since, there have been persistent demonstrations outside the ICE facility in Portland, and frequent clashes between protesters and federal officers. In the fall of 2025, these protests captured national attention, leading Trump to take control of 200 members of the Oregon National Guard and attempt to deploy them to protect the ICE building. In the first episode of OPB’s series “The Crackdown,” we look at the protests in Portland in 2025, and how competing narratives around them led to a historic test of presidential power. 00:00 The Antifa terrorist backpack 00:30 Portland’s ICE facility 01:07 “It looks like a war zone” 01:34 About OPB 02:02 Light protests begin on election day 02:52 Why Portlanders protested 03:39 Trump sends National Guard to Los Angeles 05:32 Clashes after the June No Kings march 05:56 Mortars vs. long guns 06:59 Portland in the national spotlight 08:04 “War ravaged” 09:56 Protesting vs impeding and obstructing 11:48 Pepper spraying 13:27 Troops stationed, but courts blocked deployment 15:00 ICE creating content from protests 17:10 Antifa round table at White House 17:54 Inflatable costumes 18:51 Ending and setup for pt. 2 20:25 Become an OPB member Part 2 coming soon.
