⬇️ SPECIAL TAKEOFF PROCEDURE ⬇️: On this flight, pilots had to perform a special procedure for takeoff because of the runway width. This supplementary procedure only applies when the overall width of the runway plus stabilized shoulders is between 45m and 58m (150ft – 190ft). Indeed, on a 45m wide runway, the outer engines may be above non-stabilized surface (sand, loose gravels, snow). The procedure aims at limiting the risk of contamination of the runway pavement behind the aircraft due to jet blast. The pilot flying (PF) first applies 25% thrust on all four engines. If the crosswind is at, or below 23 kts, and no tailwind : PF applies FLX or TOGA on inner engines only At 40 kts ground speed : FLX or TOGA on outer engines PF reads the FMA (in the video : « man FLX 44, SRS, RWY, A/THR blue », then checked by the captain, PM for this flight). If the crosswind is above 23 kts, and/or in case of tailwind : PF applies 50% thrust on inner engines before FLX or TOGA at 20 kts ground speed. Note : Nowadays, runways in PVG are all 60m wide. This procedure does not apply anymore and the PF applies takeoff thrust on all four engines at the same time. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Filmed in august 2014 with the captain's permission.
