Here I'm going to discuss about "Length of the Tangent to a Circle" First you should have to know what is meant by tangent to a Circle. ---------------------------------------- ▪Tangent to a Circle is a line that touches the circle only at single point. More precisely, "TANGENT TO A CIRCLE is a line that touches the circle without cutting through it." For any curve whose equation is given by y= f(x) or f (x,y)=0 the derivative dy/dx is slope of the tangent at any point p (x,y) to the curve. The equation of the tangent to the curve can easily be written by the point-slope formula . Equations of tangent to circle is , x^2+y^2+2gx+2fy+c=0 At (x1,y1)is xx1+yy1+g(x+x1)+f(y+y1)+c=0 Explanation: Let p(x1,y1)be a point outside the circle x^2+y^2+2gx+2fy+c=0 By theorems of circle, two real and distinct tangents can be drawn to the circle from an external point P. If the points of contact of these tangents with the circle are S and T , Then each of the length PS and PT is called length of the tangent or Tangential distance from P to the circle. The center of the circle has coordinates (-g,-f). By joining PO and OT. And from right triangle OPT we have , Length of the tangent=lPTl= sqrt/OP^2-OT^2 =sqrt/ (x1+g)^2+(y1+f)^2-(g^2+f^2-c^2) lPTl=x1^2+y1^2+2gx1+2fy1+c This is known as length of the tangent to a Circle or also known as tangential distance to the circle x^2+y^2+2gx+2fy+c=0 Hope so you have understand it . ...................................... ▪Locus of points having same distance from a fixed point is called a circle fixed point is called centre and fixed distance is called radius of circle. ▪A line which touch the circle only at one point is called TANGENT LINE in above video lPTl is a tangent line ▪A linr which is perpendicular to tangent line is called NORMAL LINE in above video lCTl is a normal line. consider a circle x^2+y^2+2gx+2fy+c=0 with centre C(-g,-f)and radius r=square root of(g^2+f^2-c).From a point P(x1,y1) take a tangent to circle (where T is a point of tangent ) do that the distance from point P to tangent point T is called tangential distance i.e lPTl is a tangential distance lPTl=sq.root of(x1^2+y1^2+2gx1+2fy1+c) ▪lPTl is also called the length of tangent to circle from a point .
