But a few streets away stands her real family home 37 Merwedeplein. In 2004, the house was bought by the Anne Frank foundation. It was inhabited by squatters and full of junk , recalls the architect. Their first task was restoring the house to the 1930s. Using descriptions found in Anne s letter, restorers painstakingly recreated Anne s furniture. Then a receipt was donated showing Otto Frank kept up the rent for a year after they went into hiding. He hoped the family would move back after the war.
