youtube links We compare lighting and operation of three new cycling helmets with integrated lighting. My old Bell Citi with a Cygolite blinky serves as a reference standard for the brightness of the lights. Two charging ports suggests that there are two separate batteries, one each for the front and rear light. Batteries not accessible. Charging is done with a USB cable, but the input power ports on the helmet are not USB - a lost opportunity for interoperability with standard cables. The helmet lights do not look water tight. Lumos Kickstart - most polished manufactured appearance and easily understood operation. Front and rear light are not independently controlled. Turn signals easy to operate with remote control, signaling is on both front and rear LEDs of helmet, and will cancel automatically after 20 seconds. Remote control is rechargeable, just like the helmet! Any helmet functional change is confirmed with a beep (e.g. signaling left or right) or a double beep (turning helmet off). Helmet and remote control look absolutely waterproof, each with a custom "magsafe" charging port. No access to helmet batteries. Magicshine - brightest lighting of all three. Very bright, "proper" headlight controlled independently of the taillight. Bright turn signals that can also be put into a "warning flasher" mode (this is documented in the user manual, contrary to my ramblings on the video;-). Batteries in helmet are accessible and replaceable: optionally one or two 18650 3.7V Li-ion cells can be installed. (Helmet comes with one cell). Battery compartment and electronics atop the helmet appear relatively fragile, and not overly waterproof. Rear light functions also as a brake light, sensing deceleration (I tested by tilting the helmet: works well enough). Taillight has an auto-shutoff: cancels the light when helmet is immobilized for more than 2 minutes (not sure exactly how reliable this is, and I'm not sure I like this feature). Operation of lighting features seems a bit complex - too many features and modes? Headlight and turn signals are easy to operate with the remote control, but the taillight gives me fits! Remote control not rechargeable, takes a button cell (I believe). Fit and finish of manufacture seems closer to "prototype" than "polished." Turn signal LED units are adhered to helmet with two-sided pressure sensitive adhesive tape. On my helmet, on one side the blinker LED is partially not properly adhered, a little bit loose. Instructions in the user manual are apparently translated from the Chinese - in parts the meaning of the English is confused, ambiguous, or otherwise inscrutable.
