Camargo Guarnieri is a Brazilian composer, conductor, and teacher. He studied in Sao Paulo and Paris. In early 20th century, desire for a Brazilian identity in art music became stronger. Oriented to the nationalist trend, Guarnieri became one of the most prolific and innovative Brazilian composers, sustaining concern for national musical expression in all the major genres. His Ponteios are among the most often-performed Brazilian piano works. The Portuguese word "Ponteio" is defined as an instrumental piece in free form, inspired by the manner of plucking the string of string instruments. Guarnieri said, “They (Ponteios) are really preludes. They have a character which is clearly and definitely Brazilian. I thought it would be better to use a word other than prelude to express this Brazilian character, so I wrote ‘Ponteio’ and in parentheses ‘Preludio.’” The linguistic nationalism lies not only in the title but also in the Portuguese tempo markings which suggest a descriptive and evocative quality. "Torturado" implies the serious, suffering and anxious character of Ponteio no. 49. Guarnieri’s music exhibits characters of passion, contemplation, melancholy, humor, and anxiety. “I just sent my Ponteio 49 to be printed (by the way, I have fallen in love with it! You will see that in this ponteio I rendered my heart open and let it cry high, very high).” Among the interchange of Iberian and African elements, alternating triple and duple meters, 3+3+2, is an important rhythmic material in African-Brazilian practice. Ponteio No. 49 is based of this typical pattern of 3+3+2, intensively creating the percussive effect and the ceaseless heartbeat. Although Guarnieri’s compositions after 1928 dispense with the key signature and the tonality remains vague, all the Ponteios present one or two tonal centers. Ponteio No. 49 is clearly in C Minor with a variety of dissonances and roughly-related harmonies.
