Final Thoughts & Thank You 💕 1. 🌿 What Is Zaanse Schans? Zaanse Schans is a preserved historic village in the north of the Netherlands (near Zaandam), famous for its row of traditional windmills, green wooden houses, and crafts that give a true glimpse into 17th and 18th-century Dutch life. It’s not a theme park — it’s a living, breathing place where people work, make cheese, saw wood, bake bread, and continue old Dutch traditions every day. 2. 🚉 How to Get There We took a quick train ride from Amsterdam Centraal to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans, which took only about 20 minutes. From there, it was a short scenic walk over a cute little bridge with our first view of the windmills lined along the water. I was already in love. 3. 😍 First Impressions The moment we arrived, I was speechless. The sky was clear, the grass was impossibly green, and those iconic wooden windmills were slowly turning in the breeze. People were smiling, birds were singing, and the smell of waffles and wood smoke filled the air. It felt like being inside a storybook — peaceful, colorful, and authentically Dutch. 4. 🌬 The Windmills – History in Motion There are about 10 windmills at Zaanse Schans, each with its own function — oil production, sawmills, paint mills, spices, and more. My boyfriend explained how windmills were the engine of the Dutch Golden Age, and how his grandparents used to visit similar ones as kids. We climbed into one of the mills, and I could literally feel the building shake with the power of the wind. It was humbling and beautiful. 5. 🏗️ Inside a Real Working Windmill This part was WILD. Inside the mill, everything was made of wooden gears, and you could hear the creaking as the massive blades turned above us. The miller gave us a demo of how the grindstones crush seeds to make oil. The craftsmanship was unbelievable. My boyfriend translated some of the Dutch for me, and we learned about how the Dutch harnessed nature for industry centuries before the rest of the world caught on. 6. 👞 The Clog Workshop – Dutch Craftsmanship Next up: wooden clogs! (a.k.a. klompen) We visited the clog-making museum and demo center, where we watched a craftsman carve out clogs in under five minutes using old machines. And yes — I tried on a pair. And yes — they’re surprisingly comfortable 😂 We even bought a cute pair of miniature clogs as a souvenir The staff were in traditional outfits, and they gave us a full explanation of how the cheese is made. We left with an entire wheel to take home. No regrets. 8. 💬 Meeting Locals + Hidden Gems Even though Zaanse Schans is popular with tourists, we managed to find quieter corners where locals chatted with us, shared stories about the past, and even let us peek into small craft shops and bakeries. It was in these tiny moments — sipping hot cocoa, watching ducks glide over the canal — that I felt closest to the heart of Dutch culture. 🧡 Final Thoughts & Thank You To my boyfriend — thank you for sharing your world with me. For translating, guiding, and laughing with me all day. To everyone watching — thank you for joining us on this little adventure. I hope this vlog gives you a taste of the magic that is Zaanse Schans. If you’re planning a trip to the Netherlands, don’t just stay in Amsterdam. Go a little deeper. Go a little slower.
