Mixing it Up: Strategies for an Engaged Classroom

Presenter: Dustin Meier (Doctoral Lecturer, History) This workshop will discuss strategies and activities to bolster student engagement in the classroom. While lecturing and other traditional forms of instruction hold value for communicating important course content, they do not always grasp students’ attention or address diverse learning styles. We will examine different in-class activities such as group work, debates, role-playing, brainstorming, free-writing, and more. The workshop will focus specifically on integrating various activities into one 75-minute class session while maintaining a throughline or common theme for the day. We will question how to engage students who come to class with little background knowledge on your topic, and how to find relevance to students’ lives.
