This is my take on the Porringer-Top Tea Table from the book "Queen Anne Furniture: History, Design and Construction" by Norman Vandal. In this video I cut the mortises using a router and a chisel. A video of the routing jig can be found here: • Simple Jig, Perfect Mortises || DIY Mortis... . Additionally, I shape the tapered and conical legs without a lathe. Creating the legs with a wood lathe would have been much easier, but I do not have one so I used the tools available to me. To "turn" the legs I started with a rectangular blank. I then cut a taper on two sides of the leg blank with a band saw. Next, I added layout lines and cut to those lines using a draw knife, chisel, and a block plane. This turned a tapered rectangle into a tapered octagon. Then, I used a spoke shave to round over each to the sides until the octagon became a circle. The last step was refining the shape with a file and sand paper. The use of a down draft sanding box helped to keep the air (relatively) dust free while sanding. That video can be found here: • Making a Downdraft Sanding Box with Hand C... This is part one of the series. In the next video I will get to work on the carved aprons.
