The Brief: The City of Newcastle identified three key areas within the city that have a higher-than-average rate of anti-social behaviour occurring. Rather than installing security cameras the Council proposed to activate the sites though the design, manufacture and installation of augmented reality artworks now dubbed the 'Henges'. The Henges needed to showcase physical artwork created by local artists as well as deliver digital content through augmented reality. The integration of augmented reality enhances the user experience by bringing the artwork to life & encouraging discovery, interaction & play. The Process and Result: With the forethought that everything would seamlessly integrate into each other - we are always committed to making it work! The first activity was to define the constraints, flesh out the opportunities and develop a concept showcasing what the augmented artwork enclosures could look like through Idea visualisation. Our Creative Director, Mat Dowman, was able to create the concept in under 12 hours, which is pretty crazy when you see the final product (it looks identical)! This package provided the Council with a killer pitch deck including a visualised concept, development plan and manufacturing budget leading the Council to secure necessary funding from the NSW Government. Once funding was confirmed we were able to move into Detailed Design right through to manufacturing onsite in the DA workshop, to installation at our first location - Kuwami Place. Our approach (as is the DA way) was unique - our first point of call was to determine where the unknows and risks were and break them into separate projects, allowing for complete validation. We had never casted concrete before, leading to our big milestone - confirming it could be done efficiently. You don’t know what you don’t know until you know it & that means testing, learning and refining until we get it right. Doing the Detailed Design, the engineering and manufacturing, we had to isolate the long lead items and focus our efforts and getting them into production with the forethought that everything would seamlessly integrate into each other. Fine tuning the outcomes for each to seamlessly pull it all together. The aluminium door frames required us to start with designing the extrusion dies (i.e., what creates the "mould" to create the door frames). Once we could extrusion the door frames in their funky new dies (moulds), we could then refine and machine the door frames onsite before getting them into production. The Henges have been built using sustainable products utilising local suppliers wherever possible. They are solar powered and use green concrete products. They may look simple, but they are very smart in their design. About The City of Newcastle - Night Spaces Project https://bit.ly/3LojHwp About us - Design Anthology https://designanthology.com/
