b. 22 February 1929, on a farm near Manitou, Manitoba, Canada. Clayton grew up listening to the music of the early American singers such as Vernon Dalhart and the Carter Family and was greatly impressed by the songs and yodels of fellow Canadians Wilf Carter and, in those days, Hank Snow. At 18, he taught himself to play guitar and began to sing and yodel initially for his own amusement. He also had a strong desire, like Carter, to write songs of life and the people or events that he knew about. In 1948, he wrote his first song ‘Memories Of My Old Prairie Home’, but it never gained release until 1985, when it appeared on the German label, Cattle. Late in 1952, he appeared at a local music contest and was asked to play guitar accompaniment to a pianist named Marge Redpath. She was the local schoolteacher at one of the one-room schools in the area and the two found they were immediately attracted to each other. They married in May 1954 and with Marge playing keyboards and/or autoharp and singing backing vocals, they started performing and recording together, a practice that lasted well into the 90s. Over the years Clayton has written over 200 songs many being recorded on a stream of Sunshine albums. He also appeared at numerous major country festivals but in spite of all the travelling, he always lived on and worked the farm where he was born. Clayton is known affectionately as the Canadian Balladeer.
