🇿🇦S/A: SMET Students Embark On Underground Tour Of Gold Reef City, South Africa.🇿🇦 A group of students from SMET Mining and Engineering Training Obuasi, accompanied by Chukwu Joseph of Obuasi TV, Sunday, 22 February 2026 visited Gold Reef City in Johannesburg, South Africa. The trip provided a unique opportunity for the students to explore an underground gold mine and gain insights into the history of gold mining. Gold Reef City, a popular amusement park, is situated on the site of a former gold mine that ceased operations in the 1970s. The park is designed to recreate the atmosphere of the Witwatersrand gold rush era, complete with historic buildings and a museum showcasing gold mining artifacts. The students were struck by the stark contrast between Gold Reef City's transformation into a thriving tourist destination and the state of disrepair of some of AngloGold Ashanti's former mining sites in Obuasi, Ghana. The removal of the Wawasi conveyor belt, ETS, and Adansi Shaft has diminished the potential for tourism development in Obuasi. The Obuasi Tv is urging AngloGold Ashanti to reconsider its approach to post-mining site rehabilitation and explore opportunities for repurposing these iconic sites as museums or tourist attractions, thereby contributing to the growth of Obuasi's entertainment and creative industries.
