Today I’m taking a deep dive into the Schecter CB-5 Charles Berthoud Signature 5-String Bass. With a $1,500 price tag, this bass lands squarely in mid-tier territory, but Schecter packed it with features you’d normally expect from boutique instruments. The CB-5 is a 35” scale, neck-thru design with an ash body, a beautifully flamed maple top, and a thin C-shaped walnut neck reinforced with carbon fiber rods and Padauk stringers. The rosewood fingerboard features a 16” radius and 24 jumbo frets, making the upper register incredibly easy to access thanks to the deep cutaway. Electronics include EMG 40HZ pickups paired with an EMG B64 active preamp, offering volume, blend, and a 3-band EQ with the mid frequency centered at 600Hz. Whether you’re into slap, tap, modern prog, or rock tones, this bass delivers clarity, punch, and a strong midrange presence that really helps it cut through a mix. I walk through the specs, feel, ergonomics, and tonal character, then put it through a series of tone examples so you can hear what it’s capable of in real musical contexts. If you’re looking for a fast-playing, modern 5-string with boutique vibes at a reasonable price, the Schecter CB-5 is absolutely worth checking out.
