On November 22, 1991, Beauty and the Beast was released in theaters. At the Disney-MGM Studios, Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage opened on the same day. This show is “old as time.” It premiered at the Theater of the Stars, at the end of Hollywood Boulevard, and that theater was moved in 1993 to build Sunset Boulevard, home of the Tower of Terror. The show briefly played at the Premiere Theater near New York Street, and then the newly covered Theater of the Stars opened at the end of Sunset Boulevard in July 1994. The show has played there ever since. In March 2001 the show was rearranged to fit the order of the movie better. The original show began with “Be Our Guest” and the updated show starts with the Prologue and then “Belle”, like the movie. The “Beauty and the Beast” finale used to have “doves” (pigeons) flying out over Belle & Beast until July 2002. Disney World stopped the release of birds at the end of shows in 2002, since they became easy lunch targets for red-tailed hawks, falcons, and owls. In this home video you will see… Exterior shots of the Theater of the Stars along Sunset Boulevard. Pretty much unchanged since being built in 1994. Warm up a capella group Four for a Dollar. This group had an amazing 14 year run at Disney and were discontinued in 2008. The internet says these guys are still performing around Orlando, now called Return 2 Zero. They have a few CDs. I didn’t get this on tape, but a guy would come out on stage dressed as a stage hand and start doing microphone checks. The crowd’s natural reaction to someone on stage is to cheer. Other stage hands would come out and “check” mics and then they all would break into a capella songs. This act was fun to watch. The audience loved it. They sang Happy Birthday to my friend once. Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage. “Prologue: The Enchantress”, “Belle”/”Gaston” (the two characters that sing live in this show), “Belle (Reprise)”, “Be Our Guest”, “Something There”, “The Mob Song”, and “Beauty and the Beast”.
