Forget Super Bowl Sunday, its Super George Best Sunday. NASL Dallas @ Los Angeles Aztecs 6-5-77

Sunday June 5th 1977 was a great day. Afternoon soccer at the Coliseum. My boys from ON TV network broadcasting and this was PPV before ESPN and all those pay channels existed. This is the player introductions and the first 20 minutes of the first half. I was hung over from the night before at Besties Beach Club where some of my American friends and argued over the future of soccer in America. Watch this video and you can see how new soccer was in Southern California. All the fans were learning as the went as were the broadcasters. We had me, Steve David, and the first real American Soccer goalie Bob Rigby who won the league championship 4 years earlier in Philly where he probably wasnt even 20 years old. The kids who attended the Aztecs camps that summer didnt even know me but I am guessing some local kids from the LA and San Diego area who participated played some important roles getting their friends to play AYSO and even select soccer This game is me at my best yet also at my worst. We had a good team that year and we should have made the Soccer Bowl. If you were a kid that played and watched the Aztecs or even the Jaws and later the Sockers and the Surf then only you can understand what a great time and place it was to watch and learn soccer. I miss 1976 and 1977 more than any post 1968 year at Manchester. Glad I still have these videos to share and all the best to the kids that played youth soccer in the area at the time.
