This is the Tertullian Reader — an audio collection drawn from the writings of Tertullian of Carthage, one of the sharpest, strangest, and most influential Christian voices of the late second and early third century. This is my first attempt at creating something like this, so think of it less as a polished monument and more as a working manuscript — ink still drying, margins still alive. I originally made this reader for my Historical Theology class at Zollikon Institute, where we spend time reading early Christian authors slowly, carefully, and with respect for their world. If you’re interested in studying early Christianity, church history, or theology at a serious level, you can learn more or enroll at: https://www.zollikon.org Alongside this audio version, I’ve also uploaded a written reader that is almost word-for-word with what you hear here, so you can read along, annotate, or return to particular passages without hunting for them in a larger volume. The audio for this project was produced using ElevenLabs, which allowed me to turn a teaching reader into something you can listen to while walking, driving, or—very appropriately—sitting quietly with a book open. Tertullian rewards patience. He argues like a lawyer, writes like a poet having a bad day, and thinks like a man who believes truth matters enough to be fought for. My hope is that this reader helps make his voice a little more present again. Thanks for listening.
