With Enver Motala and Leon Tikly, introduced by Catherine Sofianos The South African political economy is experiencing, similarly to many other countries, a multi-dimensional crisis which can be seen by examining a range of social, political, economic, knowledge related and cultural domains and in the planetary ecology. These crises are fundamentally a consequence of the impact, on nation states and their citizens, of political and economic, cultural and knowledge related regimes of corporate globalisation driven by the power of neoliberal ideologies and the public policies associated with them. There is a considerable body of critique about these regimes and their consequences for global and national inequality having effects on unemployment, poverty, hunger, social and psychological harm exacerbated by the militarization of imperialist states, their support for authoritarian and racist regimes, and their violent attacks on democratic freedoms and the rule of law. At the same time, there are many initiatives by social movements and communities pointing to the emergence and development of alternatives to the global polycrisis and to the forms of organisation, consciousness and education for the achievement of such alternatives. Pursued consistently, these can build a new and humane world order. This webinar builds on the discussion of the previous two events and invites participants to engage with alternatives within the broader debates of Transforming Knowledge for Sustainable Futures.
