This reed quintet is a composition/arrangement/mash up I created kind of as a lark. If you are not aware, Tchaikovsky utilized several representative pieces of music in his 1812 Overture. The Overture was to commemorates Russia's successful defense against the French invasion of the nation in 1812. The most recognizable being "La Marseillaise", the French National Anthem. He also used "God Save the Tsar!", which later on became the Russian National anthem. It opens with "O Lord, Save thy People", a Russian melody of Eastern Orthodox Troparion of the Holy Cross. These three work battle back and forth throughout the overture. For my "(The other) 1812 Overture", I choose to commemorate the Battle of 1812. I utilized "God save the King" and "The Star Spangled Banner", along with several other pieces the would have been played in conjunction with the War of 1812. The bridge is "The 8th of January", which was the date of the Battle of New Orleans and is a well-known American fiddle tune that was the basis for the song "The Battle of New Orleans" as well as the theme song for "The Beverley Hillbillies". After the bridge, I went back to the two National Anthems battling each other, but threw in "Rule, Britannia!", a song closely associated with the British Navy, and "Hail to the Chief", a song that is now the official tribute to the US President, but was played to honor the end of the War of 1812. Thank you for listening.
