I’m about to completely change how you play Half-life and enjoy VR gaming as a whole. Everything I will tell you about today is completely true and it is the culmination of testing I did over a year ago. I was in your shoes at the beginning, trying to get Half-life in VR in preparation for Half-life Alyx and I don't regret it at all. This is not Half-life Alyx, this is the original Half-Life game. Before I start, I just want to give credit to Dr. Beef as he is the creator of Half-Life in VR so I take 0 credit for making this, I am just showing you how to install it. So in order to make this tutorial work, you will need to have the latest version of Sidequest as well as a legit copy of Half-life, NOT the source version. So first open up Sidequest. Then connect your VR headset to your PC, I'm using a USB-C cable and then put on the headset. Click “Allow data to be shared with PC” and disable Airlink if you have it on. Now go back into Sidequest, it should say it's connected in the top left. Go to the search bar and type “Lambda1VR - Half-Life in VR.” Install it and wait for confirmation. Ok so now go ahead and just download Half-Life. Then go to file explorer, click “This PC” and go into your quest. Create a new folder called “xash” and just leave it for now. Then, go into your Half-Life folder and copy the entire “valve” folder into the “xash” folder. Now just restart your VR device. Even though we finished installing Half-Life VR, we are not finished with the tutorial. Now you want to open up Half-Life VR by going to apps, unknown sources, and clicking LambdaVR. Open a game, let everything load in and then exit it. We did that so we can get the texture files created. Now, go into your Half-Life folder again and find “valve_hd”. Select and copy everything and paste it into the “valve” folder in your quest. Now if you are concerned with your game’s performance or notice any type of lagging in Half-Life, only copy the Scientists and Barney files instead of everything. Click overwrite on all popups. Now the last step, we are installing 1 more graphics pack for Half-Life VR. Download and extract the file on the Reddit post to your PC. Copy the whole HL_Gold_HD folder to your Quest to the folder “xash” So it looks like this quest/xash/HL_Gold_HD Find the commandline.txt in your xash folder and copy it to your desktop in order to edit it. Edit the commandline.txt to look like this: xash3d -log --supersampling 1.25 --msaa 2 --cpu 4 --gpu 4 -dev 3 -game hl_gold_hd. After editing, copy it back to the xash folder on your Quest. Overwrite when asked. Start Lambda1VR. Go to options, video and tick "allow materials".
