English Skills Drill 120. Self-study training for children and adults. A simple way to learn the 44 sounds, 120 keyspellings and 120 keywords of English. Can you do all 4 skills? And under all three conditions? Condition A. ‘WITH’ the soundtrack? Condition B. ‘WITHOUT’ the soundtrack? Condition C. ‘FROM MEMORY’, by visualising the keyspellings (in their sound-boxes) and keywords? Practise repeating each part of the soundtrack until, speaking very clearly, you can say the names, sounds, sounds and words. 00:00 - English Skills Drill 120. 00:19 - Names C1. 00:52 - Names C2. 01:25 - Names C3. 02:01 - Names C4. 02:32 - Names V1. 03:06 - Names V2. 03:40 - Names V3. 04:12 - Names V4. 04:57 - Sounds C1. 05:29 - Sounds C2. 06:02 - Sounds C3. 06:39 - Sounds C4. 07:09 - Sounds V1. 07:46 - Sounds V2. 08:21 - Sounds V3. 08:55 - Sounds V4. 09:42 - Box Sounds C1. 09:56 - Box Sounds C2. 10:11 - Box Sounds C3. 10:27 - Box Sounds C4. 10:42 - Box Sounds V1. 10:57 - Box Sounds V2. 11:08 - Box Sounds V3. 11:21 - Box Sounds V4. 11:47 - Words C1. 12:26 - Words C2. 13:04 - Words C3. 13:46 - Words C4. 14:21 - Words V1. 15:02 - Words V2. 15:40 - Words V3. 16:18 - Words V4. 16:58 - Assessment Checklist. 17:12 - Credits and Copyright Notice. ▬ Assessing the Learning ▬ At anytime, a child or adult can be assessed on what they have learnt about the names, sounds, sound-boxes and keywords. They can be asked to say the names, sounds and words with or without the soundtrack (by using the Mute button) or (the ultimate condition) from memory. They should be encouraged to speak in a clear voice and to say the correct names, sounds and words, and without any hesitation. The assessment can be for only one of the four skills, one or more rows, or for one section e.g. Consonant Section (rows C1-4) or Vowel Section (rows V1-4). The assessment can be performed by individuals, pairs, groups or classes (assuming that the screen/monitor is big enough for groups or classes to see the video – unless, of course, the assessment condition is ‘from memory’). All of the skills, especially ‘from memory’, will improve the visualisation of letters in English words. Learners should be encouraged to practise the ‘from memory’ skill for rows C1, C2, C3 and C4, the Consonant Section (all 4 rows together), rows V1, V2, V3 and V4, the Vowel Section (all 4 rows together) and, finally, the Whole Chart (all 8 rows together). They should begin each row by saying the name of the row e.g. “C1”. Encourage them to form in the air (trace over or write) and name the letter/s over which they hesitate (and, where appropriate, say the appropriate sound or word). Saying the names, sounds and words while listening to the video, but not looking at the screen, is also a good practice (condition). It certainly highlights any keyspelling that needs attention, as is clearly indicated by undue hesitation and/or saying the wrong name/s, sound or word! ▬ More Time to Say the Names, Sounds or Words ▬ Pause the video to study the information on the screen, especially for the ‘whole chart’ screens (Black Keyspelling Chart and Blue and Red Keyspelling Chart) located at the start of each skill, or to give reminders, or to praise exemplary peformances by individuals, pairs, groups or classes (such as clear pronunciation of the sounds and/or words). ▬ THRASS Mind’s Eye Memory Challenges ▬ The skills are adapted versions of those performed using the hard copy English Spelling Chart (available as encapsulated deskcharts and wallcharts), including the Mind’s Eye Memory Challenges (which also includes a ‘Spellings Challenge’, where the learner is required to also “Say each keyword and name each letter’, as can now be seen in the four English Spelling Teacher videos e.g. • ENGLISH SPELLING TEACHER - KEYWORDS Rows C1-2 ). ▬ Modern Font ▬ The resources use a modern font (Google Quicksand) designed for display purposes but kept legible enough to use in small sizes, such as on mobiles. The letters can be easily associated with other styles. ▬ THRASS UK Channel ▬ The THRASSUK teaching videos help children and adults (as individuals, or in pairs, groups or classes) to better understand the sounds, spellings (keyspellings and non-keyspellings), syllables, consonant blends and rhymes in English words. For pupils/students, student teachers, teachers and parents, these videos are a great way to learn or revise the building blocks of English words. / thrassuk http://www.thrass.co.uk #englishskillsdrill #englishskills #englishsounds #englishletters #englishphonics #englishwords #englishspeaking #englishpronunciation #englishspelling #englishspellingchart #thrass #thrasschart #thrassuk #thrassrap
