(30 Jul 2018) Despite his troubled legacy, dozens of Zimbabweans gathered outside the polling station in the capital where former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe voted on Monday. Struggling to walk, Mugabe raised his fists to acknowledge them. Some booed the former president. He had his finger inked and was assisted by his wife into the booth. Mugabe on Sunday said Nelson Chamisa, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change party, was the only viable candidate and rejected President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the ruling party, saying: "I cannot vote for those who have tormented me." Mugabe, 94, ruled Zimbabwe from independence in 1980 until his resignation in November under military pressure and many people are anxious for change. One of the voters, Farai Nyambunga calls him a hero. "He is a hero because he ruled us for 37 years whether we liked it or not". Monday's voting turnout was high and, in a break from the past, peaceful.
