During meditation, many people wonder: should we sit completely still—without changing posture? And when pain arises in the body… what should we do? In this video, you’ll hear guidance from Meditation Master Ottamathara Sayadaw: the stability of the mind matters more than the stability of the body. In the early stages, we can try to keep the body as still as possible—but the goal isn’t “perfect stillness.” The goal is a mind that is balanced and steady. When pain appears, instead of reacting immediately, we practice knowing it: simply recognizing, “pain is present.” We learn to observe the arising and passing of phenomena, and to cultivate letting go—not clinging to pleasant feelings, and not fighting unpleasant ones. If practicing alone is still difficult, listen to Dhamma talks and meditate with others to “lean on” the power of mindfulness—then continue your own effort anywhere you are.
