Did you know there was an emperor in the United States? His name was Joshua Abraham Norton, but he was known as Norton I. His story began in 1859 in San Francisco, when he came to the local newspaper and asked to declare himself Emperor of the States. Nobody took Norton's prank seriously, but the people of San Francisco found it funny and decided to play along. The townspeople honored Norton I, the establishments served him for free, and the newspapers willingly printed absurd imperial decrees. In time, Norton I became the hallmark of San Francisco. Americans from all corners of the country came there to see the humorous emperor. Norton I died on January 8, 1880. The emperor was absolutely penniless, but the people of San Francisco arranged a lavish funeral for him. 30,000 people attended the ceremony, and 50 years later Norton was reburied with military honours, just like a real monarch.
