All aboard for the Pineapple express! If you ended up here looking for the movie starring James Franco and Seth Rogen, you're in the wrong spot, but I welcome you to stick around for the next minute or so - especially if you're high. This is the weather word of the week. Pineapple express - while a quality stoner action comedy of our time - is also a pattern in the jet stream that brings persistent and plentiful tropical moisture from an area east of the Hawaiian Islands to the Pacific Coast of the U.S. mainland. Normally, the jet stream travels well north of the Hawaiian islands. But sometimes, high pressure bubbles up in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Canada. This causes the jet stream to travel well to the north. But once this high breaks down, the jet stream splits or overcorrects itself. Now it's moving right over Hawaii and bringing all that tropical moisture to the West Coast. Pineapple express patterns are always associated with heavy rains up and down the West Coast, and some of the most famous floods in California, Oregon, and Washington are because of this pattern.
