🤿Snorkeling Raja Ampat🤿. West Waigeo. Into Hostile Territory of Aljui. Indonesia 🇲🇨. Nov 2025 ☀️🪸🐙🐟 Filmed with Canon G7X Mark 2, Gopro8 Waigeo is an island in Southwest Papua province of eastern Indonesia. The island is also known as Amberi, or Waigiu. It is the largest of the four main islands in the Raja Ampat Islands archipelago, between Halmahera and about 65 kilometres (40 miles) to the north-west coast of New Guinea. The Dampier Strait (a.k.a. Augusta's Strait) separates it from Batanta, and the Bougainville Strait from the Kawe Islands to its north-west. The "inner sea" that nearly cleaves the island in two is Mayalibit Bay, also known as the Majoli Gulf. The conflict in Raja Ampat, an archipelago in West Papua, Indonesia, is mainly related to nickel mining projects operating on several islands in the region. Raja Ampat is known for having one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world and its economy relies heavily on fishing and diving tourism. In recent years, mining companies received permits to extract nickel, a mineral widely used in batteries and stainless steel, but many local communities, environmental groups, and tourism operators began protesting due to concerns about deforestation, sediment pollution reaching coral reefs, and damage to fishing areas. Indigenous Papuan groups also argue that some projects were approved without proper consultation and affect ancestral lands. The situation has created divisions within communities, as some residents support mining because it provides jobs and income, while others oppose it to protect the environment and tourism. After protests and environmental investigations, the Indonesian government cancelled several mining permits in 2025. Following this decision, tensions increased in some villages and certain tourist sites and islands were temporarily closed by local residents as a form of protest or to demand compensation and clearer government decisions about the future of mining in the region. 🌊🌴 Some areas in Raja Ampat (such as Wayag, Wofoh, and Aljui Bay) were temporarily closed mainly because of local community protests related to nickel mining and environmental issues. In 2025, the Indonesian government cancelled several mining permits in the region after strong public criticism and environmental campaigns. However, some Indigenous communities had previously depended economically on those mining activities. As a response, certain local groups blocked access to parts of their traditional waters to protest the decision and express their concerns about lost income and local rights. Because of these demonstrations, authorities and tourism operators temporarily closed access to those zones to avoid conflicts and maintain safety. Most of Raja Ampat, however, remains open to tourism and diving. Music: Red Giant - Stellardrone Light Years - Stellardrone Cepheid - Stellardrone
