Zahn’s “scissor stair” bill — into law, a step toward increasing housing supply and improving affordability across Washington. The legislation directs the State Building Code Council to convene an advisory committee to recommend updates to Washington’s building code that would allow scissor stair designs in mid- and high-rise buildings. These designs allow two stairways within a single shaft, reducing a building’s footprint while maintaining safety standards. By using space more efficiently and reducing construction costs, scissor stairs can help make it easier to build more housing in our communities. Rep.
