Wide of protesters around monument STORYLINE Several thousand high school and university students marched through Bangkok on Saturday night in support of anti-government demonstrators trying to win the overthrow of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej. The 12-day stand-off in Thailand stems from a campaign by the People's Alliance for Democracy, a loose-knit group of royalists, wealthy and middle-class urban residents, and union activists. They accuse Samak and his government of corruption and violating the constitution. It's the first time that the student movement has shown its hand in the political crisis that's gripped Thailand over the past few weeks. Police kept watch to ensure the march was peaceful; last Tuesday opposing mobs fought running battles in the same area that left one man dead and dozens injured. Since then, though, a state of emergency was declared in Bangkok and one of the groups - the pro-government movement - has moved out of the city, so making trouble less likely. The students' destination was the city's Democracy Monument, a symbolic venue for every pressure group that's taken to street marches over the last few years. "I can't accept anyone who uses the law for their own ends. I love my country. I'm doing this for the sake of the peace of the country," student Kamolporn Wuttawes told AP Television. "I get so angry when I think about it so I came out to join the protest and to get him (Samak) out," agreed student Norapon Hirumkham. After surrounding the monument and singing patriotic songs, the students dispersed. There were no incidents reported.
