Indonesia is a football crazy nation. Everyone can see the passion whenever Timnas Indonesia play at home, and how that passion turned into poison in the the chaotic night inside Kanjuruhan Stadium. What should’ve been a competitive match of Arema vs Persebaya in Malang became one of the darkest nights in football history. The Kanjuruhan Stadium Tragedy was a catalyst of cultural violence within Indonesian football, one rooted in the combination of fractured identity and a system that kept choosing denial over reform. The locked Kanjuruhan Stadium Gate 13, the tear gas, the panic, every detail became a symbol of how easily pride can turn deadly when control is lost. Even after 135 lives were lost, the violence in Indonesian football didn’t stop that easily. New clashes between fanbases erupted on a regular basis like the lessons of Kanjuruhan were never learned. The tragedy was meant to end Indonesia’s football wars, yet two years later, stadiums and football matches in Indonesia still carry the same risk. The same cycle that led to Kanjuruhan Tragedy and the Hillsborough Disaster decades ago keeps repeating. A mix of human error and neglect, and even worse… greed.
