Chris and Stewart discuss the effects of weather on racing – whether it’s getting a late start due to snow and cold, or rain on road racing, or the difficulty to train in northern climates. He talks about road racing in the cold and rain recently in California. But mixed conditions is a great equalizer and adds a lot of variables that makes road racing exciting. He talks about the recent Trans Am race win at WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca in California in his Number 16 Gymweed Ford Mustang where he fought the Menard’s number 3 Pittsburgh Paints Mustang. Chris started on the pole after Brent Crews had to bow out. The team placed first and second with Adam Andretti finishing 8 seconds behind Chris. Chris talks about the Laguna Seca Corkscrew and what it’s like to race around turn 8 and 8a and it’s dramatic change in elevation and what it’s like to drive down the hill and get traction and brake around the blind turns. Lime Rock is probably their biggest race of the year because it’s home for Chris and he has a lot of friends and family attend. Chris discusses his life as both a race team owner as well as a race car driver and what makes each great. He discusses racing with his Dad Rob and finishing first and second in a race and being on the same team in 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 hour races. Chris talks about computers, data and stop watches versus what the driver feels about the car and the importance of being able to tell the crew how the car is driving. There is a difference between a technical driver and a natural driver and the fact a natural driver may drive around the problem rather than solving it with an engineer. Trans Am Race Cars are overpowered, but in modern endurance racing the cars are able to go flat out as hard as they can for the entire race. They review his current Trans Am Mustang, how it handles and the horsepower it puts out. It’s an FR9 based engine that has been used in NASCAR for many years and could put out over 900 horsepower, but because the Trans Am cars are rev-restricted they are limited to about 800 horsepower. Using NASCAR engines has allowed. Them to have plenty of inventory and parts for the engines. They talk about the current state of F1 racing and how it has changed and improved over the years and have had closer races. Since Liberty Media purchased F1, they have a done a great job covering and promoting Formula One racing. Stewart asks him about the popularity of carting in Europe and how young people get started in racing, whether it’s through carting programs or in the USA where micros, midgets, quarter midgets, street stocks and dirt track racing is how many get started. They discuss the success of some young drivers like Chris Bell, Kyle Larson, and Brent Crews who grew up racing on dirt tracks and how the dirt teaches you how to know the track and the car. Chris talks about bringing his kids to races and helping promote his sponsor GymWeed. Gymweed is an all natural energy drink that uses adaptogens and caffeine while being THC free. They also made Muscle Milk. Keith Martin, publisher of Sports Car Market Magazine joins Stewart for his weekly segment where we bring his blog to life. This week the topic is “Mr. Bright’s Wild Ride” which is about driving through the countryside in his friend’s Maserati 350S Convertible Replica that was built in Argentina and is powered by a 4.9 Liter Maserati four cam V8 with Weber carburetors. They also discuss the Lotus Europa Special at Classic Auto Mall as well as the evolution of Ferrari from a boutique style dealership to a mass manufacturer of vehicles. They talk about the way dealerships sell cars has changed. They also talk about how much better it is to buy a car on the internet now than in the past when you only saw one picture and there was very little description.
