The German Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) was developed shortly before World War II as an assault gun for infantry support. Combat experience evolved the StuG into a Panzerjäger (tank hunter) mounting powerful anti-tank armament behind thicker armor. By 1944 the cheap and versatile StuG was increasingly used to substitute Germany’s small number of advanced Armored Fighting Vehicles such as the Jagdpanther. This documentary explores the tactical use of the StuG III assault gun alongside the Jagdpanther tank destroyer by the German Panzerjäger-Abteilung 559 in the largely forgotten battles across the Meuse-Escaut Canal that preceded Operation Market Garden in September 1944. A German counterattack against a British bridgehead is reconstructed in unprecedented detail to evaluate the StuG in action versus British tanks and anti-tank defenses.
