Emefiele vs DSS: DSS Act On President's Order, Lawyers Are Knocking On Wrong Door | VSA | 20-07-23

A number of human rights attorneys have spoken out against the Department of State Services (DSS) in Nigeria amid an intensifying scandal over the security agency's alleged denigration of the legal profession. An insulting message that was published on the DSS's official Twitter account infuriated the attorneys even more because they were already pursuing a contempt action against Mr Yusuf Bichi, the former director general of the DSS. The tweet identified them as "charge and bail lawyers" and connected them to the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). With intentions to seek remedy from international authorities, the lawyers accused the DSS of threatening to frame them with terrorism-related crimes, prompting widespread resentment and criticism. A Federal Capital Territory High Court simultaneously ordered the DSS to charge Mr Godwin Emefiele, the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) suspended governor, appropriately if any criminal allegations are made. The court also decided that if Emefiele was taken after a suitable court within a week, he should be released on bond.
