Recent WBA World Middleweight title challenger and reigning Commonwealth Middleweight Champion, Michael Watson, takes on the experienced journeyman, Errol Christie. More info below... Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn are generally considered the best British middleweights of the early 1990's. But there was another boxer right on the fringe of the division and every bit as good as Eubank and Benn. In fact some may argue he was better... but his career was unfortunately cut short after being TKO'd by Chris Eubank during a 1991 World title fight, suffering irreversible brain damage. Watson's career started in 1984 and by 1988 he had racked up an 18-1 record and world ranked by the WBO. In July of 1988 Watson traveled for his first and only fight outside of England when he faced Israel Cole in Las Vegas. Unfortunately his trip to the States ended in underwhelming fashion as the fight was declared a draw after an accidental headbutt. Watson won his next 3 fights to earn himself a shot at the Commonwealth Middleweight title held by the undefeated Dark Destroyer himself, Nigel Benn. Benn was the favorite but Watson showed his skill by waiting out Benn's aggression and then in round 6 after Benn had tired himself out, Watson picked up a well deserved TKO. The win against Benn had earned Watson a shot at the WBA World Middleweight Champion, Mike McCallum, but Watson was stopped in the 11th in a close fought contest. Watson's record heading in against Christie was 22-2-1. Errol Christie had a good amateur career before he turned pro in 1982. He racked up 13 wins in a row before suffering his first defeat to Jose Seys by 1st round TKO. Christie bounced back with 7 wins in a row to be considered for a shot at the BBBoC British Middleweight title but his dreams were shattered following a loss to former BBBoC Brittish and Commonwealth Middleweight Champion, Mark Kaylor, by KO. Once again Christie bounced back with 4 wins against very experienced opponents but was stopped by Charles Boston in 1986. Christie's career stalled following the loss and he was never really able to recover. By 1990 his record was sitting at 32-6-1 with his most recent fight ending in a draw after 8 rounds. From the get go Watson had the faster and heavy puncher, taking only a few seconds to score the opening knock down. Christie looked like he was going to give up but he took the full 8 count and fought on surviving the round and looking a lot better by the end of it than when he started. In round 2 Christie was holding his own until Watson landed 2 solid straight rights wobbling Christie with just a under a minute left in the round. Christie was in survival mode for the last minute. Watson came out strong in round 3 determined to finish it which he did thanks to a 4 punch combo that flattened Christie and left him struggling to get to his feet. Surprisingly Christie did get to his feet but he was in no state to continue and the ref called it off. Christie decided to retire following the loss but in March 1993 he made an ill fated return, being stopped in 2 rounds by unheralded Trevor Ambrose. Christie wisely retired again with a final record of 32-8-1.
