GERD means gastroesophageal reflux disease. Gastroesophageal reflux disease means anatomically there is a problem in the GE junction. The food ha you eat is coming onto the chest wall, into the esophags and this causes high amount of irritation within the throat, in the esophagus and this is causing complete disturbance of motility of the esophagus. Esopahagus is meant to be basic in pH but as the acid is coming up, it becomes acidic in pH. The epithelial cells surface cells are known to change. So these individuals develop esophagiitis. So if it is grade 1 to grade 2 esophagiitis, but once the go to grade 3 esophgiits or Barret’s esophagiitis which is one of the precancerous condition, then we do suggest Nissen’s fundoplication. So in Nissen’s fundoplication we correct the crural defect that has become loose and we take stitches in the crural areas of the GE junction. Crura is nothing but a diaphragmatic muscle in the esophagus. We also do a procedure called as Nissen’s fundoplication. That is we take the fundus and we wrap it all around and we bring it in front . So with this it prevent hiatus hernia that cod be there along with GERD. There could be mild hernia and herniation can be prevented and this can cause good and intact structural anatomical correction that prevents reflux of acid.
