It may take a few minutes of practice to solder using a solder pick, but once you get the hang of it, soldering is much easier in the long run! Links to products: Solder pick: https://pepetools.com/collections/sol... Automatic Lighter: https://pepetools.com/collections/sol... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When using a titanium pick fresh out of the packaging, you will most likely find that solder does not want to stick to the pick. So the first thing we need to do is add a little flux to the pick itself. As flux is what is going to help us when it comes to picking up and releasing the solder. Before trying to use the pick we need to understand a little about the flux: When flux is in liquid form as it comes fresh out of the container, it’s not of much use. We need to heat it so that it will turn into a molten glass-like substance. If we think about molten glass, when it’s super hot, it pours just like a liquid. When it cools a little (not cold just cooler), it becomes less liquid and more sticky. And when it cools entirely it becomes hard like glass. We need to use the temperature of the flux and its stickiness at these temperatures to our advantage. For instance, when we want to pick solder up with our solder pick, we want the flux on our pick to be sticky – which means we want it hot, but not super hot. When we want to release our solder from our pick onto our ring band we have two things to consider…… We need the flux on our ring to be sticky (hot but not too hot), but we need the flux on our pick to release the solder, so we want that as hot as possible. Notice when I place the solder from the pick to the ring, I heat the pick (not the solder though) to make the flux on the pick liquid less sticky than the flux on the ring. Then when I touch the solder to ring, it transfers from the pick easily. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a FREE E-BOOK to find out the tools you absolutely must have to get started, where to splurge and where to save. ➡️ 📖 Download here: https://lucywalkerjewellery.com/lm/fr... _______ Want to learn more about jewellery making, including stone setting, design and rendering, as well as building creativity?
