Approach tones - the best way to solo over chord changes without relying on chord scales. Approach tones is my number one jazz improvisation exercise, a powerful tool for building your jazz vocabulary. By connecting chord arpeggios and chord tones with chromatic and diatonic approach tones from above and below, you'll learn to outline the harmony in a way that chord scale practice alone simply won't teach you. 📄 The PDFs for this lesson are no longer on my website, but you can find them exclusively on my Patreon: / magnusbakken This concept was passed on to me by Rick DiMuzio during my time at Berklee College of Music, and I later learned it came from the legendary Joe Viola. Practicing approach tones was a complete game-changer for me, and it might be the single best exercise for developing a traditional jazz vocabulary. Before starting, make sure you can play arpeggios in all 12 keys. Go slow, use a metronome, and focus on accuracy - speed will come with time. - __________________________ ⏱️ Timestamps 00:00 Introduction 00:35 Getting Started 00:59 Arpeggiations 02:24 Arpeggiations Applied 03:57 Advanced Arpeggiations 05:14 Approach Tones 07:55 Approach Tones Applied 09:03 Getting Creative 11:08 PDF's __________________________ 🎧 Listen to my latest release Slackline - https://li.sten.to/pq5p0dxq 💬 Subscribe to my Patreon - / magnusbakken 🔔 Don’t forget to like, subscribe and comment __________________________ #jazz #jazzeducation #jazzlesson #jazzlessons #chords #jazzchords #saxophone #musiclesson #learnjazz #beginnerjazz #musiceducation #approachtones #joeviola #berkleecollegeofmusic
