Opened in 1893 and spanning about 24 km, the line climbs steadily from the lakeside town of Yverdon-les-Bains — where it leaves the standard-gauge SBB network behind — up into the foothills of the Jura, gaining more than 600 m in altitude as it heads toward the scenic mountain town of Sainte-Croix. Along the way you’ll pass through pine woods, rocky outcrops and open countryside, see small stations like La Brinaz, Valeyres-sous-Montagny, Vuiteboeuf and Baulmes, and enjoy peaceful rural views framed by the Jura landscape. The single-track line is electrified at 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC, with gentle curves and gradients that make for a smooth ride both uphill to Sainte-Croix and downhill on the return to Yverdon-les-Bains.
