The hide was stifling in the harsh Spanish afternoon heat, the sun beating down mercilessly on the rugged terrain outside. Heat shimmered across the dry, ochre earth, and the stillness was almost absolute, broken only by the occasional distant call of a raven or the faint rustle of wind through the parched scrub. But then, like ancient shadows cast from the sky itself, the Griffon Vultures began to descend. Huge, imposing silhouettes circled above before gliding down with barely a sound, their vast wings held steady against the thermals. It was an awe-inspiring sight, the raw power and grace of these scavengers never fails to stir something deep in me. Their pale heads and broad, buff-coloured wings glowed under the unforgiving sunlight, casting long, distorted shadows across the baked earth. Not long after, the European Black Vultures joined them, darker, even more formidable presences, moving with slow, deliberate confidence among the gathering ranks. Photographing them in that light was a challenge, stark contrasts, deep shadows, and blinding highlights, but it also revealed every craggy detail of their feathers, every subtle shift in posture, every interaction between birds. From the hide, I captured tense moments of dominance, fleeting partnerships, and an entire hierarchy played out through body language and small gestures. Despite their often misunderstood reputation, there was a quiet dignity to them, these great birds, evolved to endure and thrive in some of Europe’s harshest landscapes. As I watched them feed and bicker, lift off and land with thunderous grace, I felt a deep respect for their role in the ecosystem. In that scorched, unforgiving light, the vultures were neither ominous nor grotesque, they were essential, ancient, and utterly magnificent.
