The Yule Goat is one of the oldest and most misunderstood Christmas traditions in Scandinavia. In this video, I explore the origin of the Yule Goat, its pagan roots, and how a once wild and chaotic ritual evolved into the familiar straw decoration seen in Denmark, Sweden, and other parts of Northern Europe today. The video is divided into three parts: Part 1 – The Origin of the Yule Goat The Yule Goat (Danish: julebuk, Swedish: julbock) likely originates from pre-Christian Norse traditions. It is closely connected to the god Thor, whose two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, pulled his chariot across the sky. Ancient sagas describe rituals involving goats, sacrifice, fertility, and rebirth—central themes of the Yule season. Part 2 – From Pagan Ritual to Folk Tradition Historical sources from the 17th century describe the Yule Goat as a disruptive and theatrical figure. Farmhands would dress in white sheets, wear goat skulls, burst into homes, shout insults, and demand food and beer. In some regions, the Yule Goat also brought gifts and was believed to bring fertility and luck for the coming year. Part 3 – The Gävle Goat and Modern Traditions The video also covers the famous straw goat of Gävle, Sweden—one of the most well-known modern expressions of this ancient tradition—and how the Yule Goat survives today as both decoration and ritual symbol. I also look at related European traditions, including: -Julebukking in Scandinavia -Pagan winter rituals involving goats -Krampus traditions in Central Europe -Proto-Slavic winter festivals such as Koliada This video connects Norse mythology, folklore, archaeology, and seasonal traditions, showing how ancient pagan beliefs were reshaped rather than erased by Christianity.
