NOAHITE OR WHAT ATTRACTS TOURISTS IN KHINALIG? The ancientry of Guba testifies the human occupancy of this region from ancient times. It is mentioned in the ancient Albanian and Arabian historical resources and the works of European geographers. ‘Guba’ toponym still has no unique disentanglement. The inhabitants of the high-mountain settlement Khinalig have their own view on the history of their mother-land. They claim that this area is connected with Noah. According to legend, seeing the high and smooth terrain near current Khinalig village, Noah dropped anchor here and told everybody to leave the ark. Consequently, Khinaligians identify themselves as Noah’s future generation. It is interesting that the famous Norwegian scientist-traveler Thor Heyerdahl visited Guba while being in Azerbaijan because he believed that “ases” mentioned in German-Scandinavian epos ‘Edda’ are the primogenitors of Azerbaijanians. In ‘Edda’ it is mentioned that ases led by Odin live in an airy village Asgard. What if Khinalig is the same Asgard village? THE REGION OF 100 RIVERS AND MOTHERLAND OF MILLIONAIRES Guba is famous not only for its rich history but also for original nature. The most famous basin in this region is Gudialchay river. Besides this, there are more than 100 large and small rivers in Guba. The Afurja Waterfall on the Valvalachay river registered as ‘National Monument of Azerbaijan’ and the colony of griffon vulture – eagles registered in the Red Book of Azerbaijan live in the lin nearby are also situated in Guba. The most unique stone bridge of our country was built particularly on the Gudialchay river in 1910. There is only one such kind of bridge in Azerbaijan. The Gudialchay bridge is state guarded as heritage asset. CARPET OF 150 THOUSAND COST AND DUMA’S ADMIRATION It is widely known that Guba – is the largest carpet center in Azerbaijan. The carpet ‘Golu Chichi’ woven here in 1712 is now in the ‘Metropolitan Museum’ in New-York. Recently in one of the village the owner of a house found the antique rug – sumach kept in coffer and decided to sell it. The found a foreign buyer and as an answer on the question about the price they showed 1 and 5 on fingers meaning 1500 dollars. The foreign collector knowing the worth of assets thought that the owners asked for 150 thousand dollars and accepted the offer! Guba always attracted the travelers. The Russian writer Bestujev-Marlinsky was here and he called Azerbaijan ‘paradise on the Earth’.
