Bareilly City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri resigned from his post on Republic Day, citing the alleged assault of disciples of Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand during the Prayagraj Magh Mela and opposition to the new UGC rules. In his resignation letter, Agnihotri claimed the new regulations threaten the rights and future of general category students. He also criticised the BJP and shared protest posters on social media. Agnihotri accused the government and administration of being anti-Brahmin and insensitive to religious sentiments. His resignation has triggered political reactions, with Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand saying such a step reflects deep personal pain. Agnihotri is a 2019 PCS officer and an IIT-BHU graduate.
