Brazil’s presidential election: Real challenges, real choices

What happens in Brazil, the world’s seventh-largest economy, is important to the stability and prosperity of the United States and the Americas as a whole. The interventionist policies of President Dilma Rousseff have produced economic stagnation, and a restless electorate is giving serious consideration to free-market alternatives as they choose their next president. After failing to win a majority in the first-round vote on October 5, Rousseff — a member of the Workers’ Party— will now face Social Democrat Aécio Neves — an advocate of economic liberalization and freer trade — in a run-off election on October 26.
