Leila Hassan Howe’s journey through activism is marked by her commitment to advancing social justice and promoting inclusive practices. During the early stages of her career, Hassan Howe became a founding member of the Race Today Collective, eventually becoming editor of its journal Race Today. The organisation was significant in uplifting Black communities with radical journalism, interviews and campaigns. The Race Today’s most prominent campaign was to bring visibility to the New Cross house fire; the aftermath of such tragedy claimed the lives of 13 young Black children. In response, Hassan Howe co-organised the Black People’s Day of Action to demand government action on racial inequalities. The event was a significant moment in the struggle for racial justice in the UK. Hassan Howe is a chairperson of the Darcus Howe Legacy Collective, dedicated to preserving the contribution that her husband, Darcus, made to the British and International movements for change and justice. In 2019, Hassan Howe co-edited Here to Stay, Here to Fight and in 2023 a special issue of Race Today, the first since 1988, designed to bring Britain’s radical Black history to new audiences. Following the success of 100 Black Women Who Have Made A Mark, Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage is delighted to launch a new project for 2026; Making the Invisible Visible: Black Women 365 Days of the Year. Each day will showcase a different woman, whose story has shaped Black British or global Diasporic history; many of whom remain overlooked or under-celebrated in mainstream narratives. This will take the form of a rolling programme of short films, released throughout the year to keep these stories in daily circulation and to create an evolving constellation of leadership, resistance, artistry and enduring impact.
