A new Akron Independent Police Auditor report is disputing the city police department's claim that an officer was justified in punching a man’s head repeatedly during a June 2024 traffic stop. The incident started when Akron police pulled over a man driving with an expired vehicle registration, and body worn camera footage captures the sequence of events. We know from the police auditor's report that the driver of the vehicle was Dorrell Battles, and he was arrested by officers after they discovered he was driving with a suspended license. As one officer places Dorrell in handcuffs, another officer, Officer Warren Spragg IV, is talking to his brother Terrell Battles in the passenger seat. The video shows Terrell arguing with Spragg for more than a minute, as the officer asks Terrell to step out of the car and he doesn't. Terrell repeatedly asks the officer why he has to exit the car, saying he didn’t do anything wrong. Next, Spragg can be seen pulling Terrell out of the car, pushing him to the ground, and punching his head.
