Korynt to miasto portowe oraz nadmorski ośrodek w środkowej Grecji na półwyspie Peloponez. W niedalekiej odległości od współczesnego miasta znajdują się ruiny starożytnego Koryntu. W starożytności miasto stanowiło jeden z najważniejszych greckich ośrodków handlu z państwami Azji Mniejszej, Bliskiego Wschodu i Egiptu. Największy rozkwit miasta przypada na VIII wiek p.n.e. i trwał przez trzy wieki. Korynt słynął z pięknej, oryginalnie zdobionej ceramiki. W II wieku p.n.e. Korynt został zdobyty i zniszczony przez Rzymian. W 44 roku p.n.e. Juliusz Cezar polecił odbudować i ponownie zasiedlić miasto, które stało się głównym ośrodkiem Achai. W kolejnych wiekach miasto było wielokrotnie niszczone przez liczne trzęsienia ziemi a dodatkowo Korynt stał się celem najazdów Normanów, Florentczyków i Wenecjan. Na początku XX w wybudowao nowe miasto i specjalne antysejsmiczne domy. Z tego niegdyś potężnego miasta do czasów obecnych przetrwały m in. pozostałości doryckiej świątyni Apolla, rzymska agora, Odeon, amfiteatr oraz fontanna Pirene. Nad miastem góruje starożytna twierdza Akrokorynt z VI w. p.n.e. Twierdza była rozbudowywana przez Greków, potem Rzymian i Bizantyjczyków. Przez wiele lat była niezdobyta aż do 1209 roku. Akrokorynt należał przez wiele stuleci do Turcji Osmańskiej a po wypędzeniu ich w 1821 roku stracił na znaczeniu. Do dziś zachowały się mury obronne i cysterna. Corinth is a port city and seaside resort in central Greece on the Peloponnese peninsula. In the near distance from the modern city there are ruins of ancient Corinth. In antiquity, the city was one of the most important Greek trade centers with the countries of Asia Minor, the Middle East and Egypt. The city flourished at its peak in the 8th century BC. and lasted for three centuries. Corinth was famous for its beautiful, originally decorated ceramics. In the 2nd century BC Corinth was conquered and destroyed by the Romans. In 44 BCE Julius Caesar ordered that the city, which had become the main center of Achaia, be rebuilt and re-inhabited. In the following centuries, the city was destroyed many times by numerous earthquakes and, additionally, Corinth became the target of invasions by the Normans, Florentines and Venetians. At the beginning of the 20th century, it built a new town and special anti-seismic houses. From this once mighty city, among others, have survived to the present day. the remains of the Doric temple of Apollo, the Roman agora, the Odeon, the amphitheater and the Pyrenees fountain. The city is dominated by the ancient fortress Acrocorinth from the 6th century BC. The fortress was expanded by the Greeks, then the Romans and the Byzantines. It was not conquered for many years until 1209. Acrocorinthia belonged to Ottoman Turkey for many centuries and after its expulsion in 1821 it lost its importance. The defensive walls and the cistern have survived to this day.
