Join me for a scenic VR helicopter flight in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, flying the Robinson R66 over one of the most iconic natural landmarks in the United States, Crater Lake, Oregon. This flight takes place on a beautiful summer day with clear visibility and calm winds, perfect for exploring the deep blue waters and dramatic volcanic terrain of the Crater Lake region. We begin in a field just outside Crater Lake Lodge, starting with a brief walk-around preflight check before climbing into the cockpit for a quick engine start. After liftoff, we head south over Munson Springs to gain altitude and airspeed before turning north, passing back over the lodge and out over the lake itself. Formed nearly 8,000 years ago after the collapse of Mount Mazama, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States and is famous for its striking clarity and color. We take in sweeping views of the caldera walls, rim forests, and shoreline before flying directly over Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder cone rising from the lake’s surface. From there, the flight continues south over rolling hills and dense forests before turning east and then north, gradually descending back toward our original departure point for a smooth, controlled landing. This was a relaxed, no-pressure scenic flight focused on enjoying the landscape, lighting, and atmosphere of the Crater Lake region from the air.
