#OdishaBuddhism #ScootedOff #documentary Join us on Scooted off as we embark on a breathtaking journey through the Jajpur district of Odisha. Our destination is the legendary "Diamond Triangle"—a cluster of ancient Buddhist monasteries including Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, and Lalitgiri that once served as the global center for Vajrayana Buddhism. The Journey Begins Our expedition starts in Bhubaneswar, where we hit the open road for an 88-kilometer ride into the heart of the Assia hills. As we approach Chandikhol, the landscape transforms, revealing the towering peaks that protected these monastic retreats for over a millennium. We follow the road signs toward Udayagiri and Ratnagiri, tracing the same paths that ancient scholars once took to reach these centers of excellence. Ratnagiri: The Hill of Jewels Ratnagiri is the crown jewel of Odisha's Buddhist heritage. We take you inside Monastery 1 to witness what many consider the most beautiful structural entrance in India. Carved from blue-green chlorite, the doorway is a masterpiece of early medieval art, featuring intricate floral patterns and the divine Gaja-Lakshmi. Within the massive paved courtyard, we explore the cells where monks lived and meditated, and we stand in awe before the colossal 12-foot Buddha in the Bhumisparsha Mudra. Udayagiri: A Marvel of Ancient Engineering Our visit to Udayagiri coincided with the Bauddha Mahotsav, an international congregation of monks gathered to honor Guru Padmasambhava. We had the rare opportunity to walk the red carpet toward the ancient ruins. Udayagiri is famous for its incredible rock-cut stepwell (Baoli) and sophisticated drainage systems. These features prove that the monks of the 8th to 10th centuries were masters of environmental engineering. We also explore the stunning Jatamukuta Lokeshvara statue and the unique brick stupa with its four cardinal niches housing the Dhyani Buddhas. A Lesson in Civic Sense During our exploration of the Udayagiri shrine complex, we encountered a sight that truly saddened us—modern plastic litter in this sacred historical space. In this video, we emphasize the importance of civic responsibility. We must protect our history and keep our heritage sites clean. Join us as we take a small step toward conservation during our tour. Lalitgiri: The Ancient Heart We take a brief but profound look at Lalitgiri, the oldest of the three sites. From its apsidal Chaitya hall to the ruins of its ancient monasteries, Lalitgiri provides the foundation for the entire Diamond Triangle. It is here that some of the most sacred relics of the Buddha were discovered, making it a site of immense spiritual importance. Mahavianyaka Temple: Where Five Gods Unite Our final stop is the Mahavianyaka Temple in Chandikhol. Nestled in the Barunavanta hills, this temple is a unique spiritual site where Ganesha, Surya, Vishnu, Shiva, and Durga are worshipped as a single unified deity. We hear from the local priest about the legends of Rati Devi and the emergence of the sacred granite stone.
