"Vienna" by Ultravox and The Synths That Made a New Romantic Classic | Vintage Gear Breakdown

What makes “Vienna” by Ultravox one of the most iconic synthpop ballads of all time? In this episode, we explore how the Roland CR-78 drum machine, Minimoog, Elka Rhapsody and other classic synths transformed Ultravox from an experimental post-punk act into pioneers of the New Romantic sound. After John Foxx left the band, Midge Ure stepped in, and a new sonic identity emerged. To me, “Vienna,” is one of the most cinematic tracks of the 1980s that starts with a minimalist sound and grows into textures and sound layers that make this song timeless. In my studio, I break down the song using vintage gear and some VSTs from Logic Pro.
