Do Over the Counter Teeth Whitners Work?

Consumer reporter Clark Howard investigates. Well, it's a fact. Our smiles are getting brighter. According to the American Council of Cosmetic Dentistry, teeth whitening is by far the most common procedure wanted by patients, but what if you don't want to pay the big bucks for a cosmetic dentist to whiten you teeth? Channel 2's consumer advisor, Clark Howard, put over-the-counter products to the test. Clark Howard: Smiling for the camera is serious business at the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Debra King is an expert. She was on the TV show, Extreme Makeover. We asked her to look at the cheap end of teeth whitening, whitestrips. We looked at three brands. Lis tried Rembrandt, Mel used Listerine Whitestrips, and Carolyn sampled the Crest Whitestrip Classics. Before they could use them, Dr. King needed a baseline test. After taking notes on where each volunteer started, they went to work. Carolyn had to wear the Crest Whitestrips twice a day for 30 minutes. Carolyn Clayton: Once it gets in your mouth on your teeth, you kind of feel as if you don't speak clearly. So, it was a lot of hassle I would say. Clark Howard: Lisa had it easier. A half hour once a day. She did it every night Lisa Kimsey: It left a film. Like, a really thick film and I had to brush my teeth afterwards. Clark Howard: Mel had it the easiest. He used Listerine strips twice a day, but they dissolved in his mouth. Mel Stephens: I think it's a good product and it's probably going to workout for lots of people. Clark Howard: But, the bottom line is what matters. How well do they work? Professional whitening can get your teeth 5 to 8 shades lighter, but it costs hundreds of bucks. How well did the cheapo whitestrips work? Let's look at Carolyn first. Dr. King: You did get a little bit whiter. Not significantly, but you did get a little whiter. Clark Howard: A little bit is right. In tho weeks, Carolyn's teeth got one shade lighter. It took her 14 hours of her time and $25 to get there. Next, Mel. He used the quick dissolve Listerine whitestrips. Dr. King: Can you tell a difference? Mel Stephens: I think I can, but I'm waiting on you to tell me. Clark Howard: Mel's teeth got one and a half shades lighter. Like Carolyn, his strips costs about $25 but he only spent 2 hrs and 20 minutes of his time. Last, we have Lisa. She had the whitest teeth to start with. She spent 7 hours of her time and two weeks of her whitener costs $50. Let's see what happened. Dr. King: You actually got two shades whiter which is the most that we got with this experiment. Clark Howard: So what's Dr. King's take on the products? She says she wasn't surprised by the results. Dr. Debra King: I have a lot of patients that have tried the over-the-counter whitening strips, because it is less expensive and then they come in and actually do the professional whitening. Clark Howard: Dr. King said these over-the-counter things work just fine if you're looking to pick up just a couple shades and, the best part, they're turbo cheap. But, if you got to do a big change in the color of your teeth, you're going to have to pay huge dollars to get it done. I'm Clark Howard, Channel 2 Action News. Professional teeth whitening can cost up to $800, but Clark says many cosmetic dentists offer specials so don't be afraid to ask the office about it's upcoming specials.
